Many people want to be able to make money as a freelancer. A freelancer is someone who is able to offer a service to people without having to work for a company. Freelancers are great because they are able to control their prices & schedule. One of the easiest ways for a novice graphic designer to break into the freelancing business is through creating a logo design business.
The first step to creating this new business is to sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud. You can sign up for the $79.99 plan which includes access to all Adobe apps including Photoshop (my favorite), Illustrator, In-Design, Audition, & many more. With access to these apps, you will have all of the tools you need to create logos for people. However, to speed up the learning curve of graphic design, the package also comes with 10 images per month with Adobe Stock. Adobe Stock is a stock photography site where you can pull images.
One hidden feature of Adobe Stock is the ability to search for template logos for people. Now I am not advocating you to start a logo design business and copy logos from Adobe Stock to present as originals to your customers. I am suggesting you search for template logos in a similar field to your customers. For instance, if you are doing a logo for a doctor’s office, search “doctors office logo”. You will find a vast array of templates. Once you download the template, you can then individualize the logo by changing colors, adding effects, adding/changing text, or any other changes that will make the logo unique.
If you are brand new to Photoshop, there are not many of the tools you will need to be able to learn this method. On the tutorial video above, I create a logo by only using the move tool, crop tool, & blending options. While the final logo I created made use of the original shape I downloaded from Adobe Stock, it is a unique logo that would work for a real estate customer.
Most of your clients are not looking for something incredibly complicated. They are going to want something that looks modern, simple, & unique. As long as you can create a logo that fits those qualifications, you will be able to get your logo design business off of the ground in no time. You could expect to make between $200 – $500 per logo once you have a strong understanding of customer acquisition & you can deliver what your customers are looking for. Be prepared to do revisions for your customers until they are happy. Keeping your customers happy is definitely the key to success in any graphic design field.
You can start your business by advertising your services on social media & by asking around to your friends and family. If this is not an option for you, there are two great freelancer websites for you to post your services to: Fiverr.com & Upwork.com. These are two sites that will allow you to list your services. With Fiverr, you may need to offer your services at a lower rate in order to get started. With Upwork, you can scroll through jobs to look for clients looking to have logos designed.
